Girne

According to manuscripts dated 1300AD, the first origin of the old bazaar
goes back to the Lusignan Period. At those times, there were no bazaar
building. It was more of an open market area in which people could sell
their goods. Everyday, the Cypriots came in with their agricultural products
to sell in the market, but they had to be out by sunset, when the town gates
were closed.
The location of the old market was opposite the
large Round Tower where the Old Bazaar Bandabuliya building is now. Of
course,, artisans such as blacksmiths, weavers, carpenters etc lived inside
the town itself for the benefit of the French. The British invaded the
island in 1878 bringing order and rules to the many public offices and
municipal councils. Thirteen years later, the British rule on the island,
according to the minutes of the year 1891, at the Municipal Council's yearly
session, it was decided t0o establish a new Municipal Market Building (Town
Hall).
The Old Bazaar has been restored by Girne
Belediye into a touristic town hall which consists of cafes, bars,
restaurants and souvenir shops. One important attraction is the miniature
replica of the Kyrenia Ship. |
